I love our Brooklyn apartment (that’s the guest room, above), and now that we’ve lived here for almost eight years, I know all about the place. The following sentence is heard very much forty-something but: for the fall, I’m happy to organize our rooms, remove storage space, and add amazing decorations and fun. Here are five ideas (and I’d love to hear more about your design these days!)…

1. Take art to unexpected places. How good is the wallpaper on the bottom of the screen? I love to see paintings placed above, below, around corners…

…and behind closed doors, like in David and Wendy Coggins’ home in Minnesota.

2. Paint our stairs. Right now, our stairs and entryway are white, which is nice but meh. Even if we never go, like the townhouse above, maybe we can paint a pink or dark blue curtain.

3. Display book covers. I had forgotten how good it looks when multiple books are stacked on a bookcase, and I really like to do this with a John Currin cover.

Side note: Our house doesn’t have a window that would work like this, but how cute is this bookcase?

4. Prepare the artwork. Two years ago, I gave our living room a “fakeover” by rotating two paintings, and I was amazed at how the place looked. I’m also happy to bring in a few pieces from emerging artists and small sellers, like this and this and this.

5. Add the brownies. My friend’s favorite color is brown, and she says she’s been teased all her life. But it is his moment to shine because this fall, brown is big in fashion and decoration. I’m inspired to bring some purple into our home – maybe a blanket? Or a pillow?
What about you? How much do you know these days? I want to hear… Do you remember the introduction to this reader?
